Selvage Runs Left to Right

Selvage Runs Top to Bottom

After cleaning up my sewing room I wasn’t in the mood to cut out a new pattern, so I grabbed my Tried-N-True Hot Patterns Plain & Simple Shirtdress, which I’ll make up in the short sleeve version in this sunny designer cotton from Gorgeous Fabrics.  This  pattern is out of print, but it looks similiar to the HP P&S Iconic Shirtdress.   This fabric is a stunning; the pattern repeat is really large – 24 inches.  On the left is a view with the selvage vertical, running left to right.  The repeat is pretty obvious and I think this fabric is meant to cut on the cross grain.  On the right you see it on the cross grain: much more interesting!  I also found the designer signature, and its parallel to the cross grain, so I’m pretty convinced that’s the way to go.

This cotton is very fine, almost a batiste, so for a dress it needs a lining.  I have some white china silk for that.  This will also need a single layer layout to keep the large pattern from being lopsided in the finished dress; it would look pretty bad to have all blue on one side and all white on the other! For accessories I want to find a skinny black patent leather belt and black patent sandals.
