I have to give credit to Pattern Junkie (my current must-read daily blog!) for this tip; she found a vintage pattern that had a note on the tissue. Basically, when cutting a pattern piece that lays out on a fold, leave a margin on the fold line for easier pinning.

I like to leave that margin on the pattern piece so that I remember that the piece is to be cut on the fold. You know how we can forget to do that and then don’t have enough fabric for a seam…
Pinnng? What’s that? LOL! I usually leave the margin but for a far-less useful reason. I leave it because it’s less work than cutting it off.
It IS one of those simple but brilliant things, isn’t it?! When I pulled out that pattern I couldn’t figure out why the heck the prior user had cut out everything BUT certain sides…but once I realized they were all the fold lines and tried it, it really was helpful!
Being able to touch base with other interested parties, message boards or blogs, is the biggest + of cyberspace. Memom had me learning to lay the table knife handles so they were off the fold. Used knives until I found other weights many years into my sewing.
I always do this because I am too lazy to cut the tissue out on the line right away. And you are right, it is handy!
Yup, that’s how my Mom taught me to lay out a pattern! So I’ve always done it that way . . . it’s worked for me for, oh, a good 45 years! (can’t believe I’m old enough to have started sewing 45 years ago!)
