Last week at lunch I was in the Filene’s Basment store on Highland Ave, in Newton, Mass. and I bought this dress, it was one of those love-at-first-sight things. This store is a gold mine of designer fashions, although this $35 dress is by no means made from great materials, its got some good things going for it:- Love the dainty double ruffle and simple neckline; not too frilly or blowzy
- Love the faux high-waist skirt look with the tiny pattern on the fabric. Also like the faux high-waist skirt because I don’t need to tuck it in all the time when I get up from my desk.
- The bodice is a sheer overlay on a knit with sheer sleeves, a nice subtle touch.
This dress is not made from fine materials; the sheer is polyester, the bodice underling is a nylon knit, the skirt is just a heavy cotton interlock and the skinny belt is an el cheapo fake patent leather. I’m already on the look out for a replacement skinny belt in genuine patent leather.
This dress also some construction details that stand out:
- The three fabric buttons on the bodice fasten at center front with loops, and there is even an underlay to prevent bra peekout.
- This dress zips up the side with an invisible zipper.
- The skirt has flattering released tucks for gentle shaping through the hips
- The hem as a contrast piece of skirt fabric running parallel at the hem for interest.
Another interesting thing is that Simplicity 2724 is essentially this very same design. I think I need this pattern because I’d love to make another version of this dress in better fabrics. The skirt in nice wool crepe or double knit would be fab with the bodice in real silk chiffon and silk faille.

I loooove that style. And, may have to copy it post haste. I like your new blog! I always enjoy your post on Sewing Divas!

Hi Phyllis: I just subscribed to your new blog through bloglines. Love your new blog with it’s fresh look and wordpress.org functionality. And your new dress. It’s all a breath of fresh air!!!
Can you do a post on getting a good sewing table? I already have a sewing machine and use my kitchen table but when I have to cut our a large pattern, I have to lug out the tables’ leaf. Help.
How big, long tall can the table be? Where can I find an inexpensive one? Can I make one?
Things like that.
Love your blogs.
Thanks.
