Pattern Cutting Made Easy: A Step by Step Introduction, by Gillian Holman
This book is part of a series on fashion and fashion design published by BT Batsford. This slim but useful book reads and looks like a textbook – but it’s not so detailed or technical that it would intimidate a home sewer who wanted to learn simple pattern drafting. This is a great book to have if you want an easy to use reference for those times when you want to change a design element in an existing pattern. Each drafting instruction is presented by it’s design element – Skirt with Flounce, Deep Cowl Neckline, Two-Piece Sleeve, etc. – which makes it very easy to find the design element you might want to incorporate into your pattern. This is not, however, a book about fit – it’s solely about pattern drafting and design. There are no instructions at all for fitting issues. You would use this book to modify an existing pattern that already fits you, or use it to modify a straight-out-of-the-envelope pattern before you fit to yourself. The instructions are precise and short, and the simple line drawings are easy to understand. Intermediate sewers and above will be able to use this book without difficulty, and beginners who are interested in the geometry of pattern drafting will be able to begin to see just how patterns are put together. Gillian is an excellent writer, clear, precise, and unambiguous, and this book is a fine addition to a sewing reference library.
